The Town of Chesterton, IN is a charming and vibrant community located in Porter County in northwest Indiana. Chesterton is about 50 miles southeast of Chicago and close to the southern shore of Lake Michigan and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. In 2014, Chesterton’s population was estimated to be 13,571.
Chesterton Utility contracted with The Sidwell Company to develop and deploy a GIS field data collection workflow for performing the liftstation inspections on a mobile device and importing this information into an Esri File Geodatabase. The implemented solution for collecting the inspection information is ArcGIS Online using the Collector Application for ArcGIS on iPads.
Sidwell created a geodatabase to mirror the information on the current paper inspection form. Sidwell then assisted the town to establish an ArcGIS Online organization and member group for five field users. Sidwell customized the Esri Collector application for ArcGIS data collection forms to provide a streamlined checklist for the field staff to fill out the inspection information on the iPads. The inspection data is collected and stored on a web service layer that can be accessed in the office in real-time.
Sidwell also developed ArcGIS Models to assist the town in transferring this inspection data from the web service layer on the iPads to the file geodatabase after the inspections are performed. The web service is then cleared and is ready for the next round of inspections.[/column]
In their partnership with Sidwell and their use of ArcGIS Online with the Collector app, Chesterton has been able to enhance their use of GIS data and workflows to streamline utility operations. The result is that the Town of Chesterton now has a digital record of all inspections and a history for each liftstation. The Town can access all liftstation inspections in the GIS by identifying a liftstation and easily viewing all related historical inspections.
Sidwell also instructed the Town how to use core ArcGIS reporting tools to run reports against any piece of information gathered in the liftstation inspections. For example, the town can easily run a report on all lift stations that failed inspection items using ArcGIS reporting tools. Additionally, Chesterton Utility is using the model described above to perform inspections on other assets, such as the sewer manholes, sewer mains and daily logs.[/column]
